American Almost Sentenced To Death In China For Passing a Joint

I wish I was kidding, but I'm not. This totally sounds like an out of season April Fool's joke.

And let me preface this by saying the kid is fine, he's safe back home and this was all just a scare, but to be honest, it's also freaking barbaric.

So what happened is that Matthew Fellows a 23 year old from Gambrills, Maryland went as an exchange student to China, long story short, he smoked pot, as you do, and passed the joint to someone and well, turns out someone saw that and Matthew was arrested. Now, according to the ass-backwards Chinese laws, this counts as drug trafficking. Yes. Passing a joint counts as drug trafficking, which is a criminal offense punishable by death over there. So he was detained for EIGHT FREAKING MONTHS in a cell with 15 other people, eating a bowl of rice and a glass of porridge a day. Wow... They really like to spend the big bucks on prisons over there.

The family hired lawyers, they were able to prove Matthew's innocence and like I said, he was released and is now safe home. Yet somehow none of this makes me feel any better about the state of [weed] affairs around the world. It's scientifically proven that Cannabis is actually a healthy and noble plant, getting executed for using it is just sad and disgraceful.
