Continuing with the skeletons theme for this month, 'cause we're getting in the Halloween spirit, I bet you didn't know that Cannabis can make your bones stronger!
In a study published by The Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, which was conducted by researchers from Tel Aviv University and Hebrew University, researchers discovered that a chemical found in Marijuana known as Cannabidiol or CBD, for short, increases bone strength and speeds up the healing of fractures. As we've previously discussed, oh so many times in this blog, CBD is the non-psycho-active component in weed, meaning that it does not get you 'high'.
The way CBD works on your bones, is during the healing process, researcher Yankel Gabet says, while enhancing the maturation of the collagenous matrix, which provides the basis for new mineralization of bone tissue. The treatment with CBD causes healed bones to be more resistant to damage in the future.
The team of researchers produced mild femoral fractures on rats, then injected them with Cannabis compounds, with and without THC to see whether THC would make a difference. It didn't. The stoned rats did perform way better than the control group, who were left to heal on their own.
Now, before you rush to substitute your calcium pills with a big, fat joint, I'm pretty sure it doesn't work like that, but it's worth to keep an eye on the news for more developments on this front.
